Al-Mahāsin wa al-Addād (The Merits and The Opposites) is a literary work attributed to the scholar al-Jahiz, composed in a robust style that examines the virtues and vices of various customs, actions, traits, and realities. The central thesis of the work –the juxtaposition of the commendable and the reprehensible– dictates its rhetorical structure. The book is primarily a collection of anecdotal transmissions, encompassing both ancient and contemporary events, that al-Jahiz synthesized into a refined prose style rich in vocabulary and complex syntax, reflecting the moral wisdom inherent in these accounts.
The structural use of antithesis lends the work a degree of clarity and accessibility by providing a well-defined framework for the reader. Furthermore, this approach represented a departure from the period’s literary conventions. However, the methodology was later adopted by others, most notably Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Bayhaqī in his work Al-Mahāsin wa al-Masāwi. The text contains approximately 36 pairs of Merits and opposites (totaling 72 thematic sections), in addition to four topics that deviate from this binary rule and four “Merits” presented without corresponding opposites. Individual sections typically range from 4 to 8 pages, with a few exceptions.
